Our 'virtual' Ted Try competition for 2020!

Each year ahead of our annual exhibition we set our members the challenge of creating an artwork on a specific theme. The theme for 2020 was 'Out of this World'.
Our exhibition would have opened its doors today (23 May), but with Covid-19 this has not been possible. Instead we have invited members to submit a digital image of their work exploring this theme. 22 works were submitted - 21 by individuals and one as a collaboration of nine artists who attend our Thursday Class. The winner of the competition is awarded the Ted Try Cup (left).
We ask a local artist to judge our entires and this year we want to say thank you to Linda Scott (BA Hons, MA).
Linda graduated from Winchester School of Art, Southampton University with a BA Hons in 1996 in Art/Art History followed by an MA in Design History & Material Culture in 2000. Her artwork comprises 2D & 3D mixed media sculptures, montages, collages, painting and drawing plus photographic images. She creates art installations for All Saints Marlow and have, in the past, exhibited in the Mall Galleries, Hyde Park galleries et al. in London and in Winchester and elsewhere in the south east.
Linda has chosen a winner, runner up and two commendations and told us that the entries "displayed a wide variety of ways in which the theme 'Out of this World' was interpreted and it has been quite and challenge to cchoose from the array of talent and the different apporaches to the subject . . . It was fascinating to see such a range of images inspired by the theme".
The winning entries are set out below followed by a presentation view of all entries. Some works are offered for sale and where this is the case you can click on the image and this is linked to the artists email address for you to make contact directly to arrange payment and collection / delivery.
We hope you enjoy the entries - which one would you pick?

Winner

Wilma Johnston-Ball
'Out of this World'
Judges comment: "The winner is No. 19. It is a strong image and a skilful use of mixed media. Its fragmented portrayal of a person appearing fearful and anxious depicts how many must be feeling in lockdown - life disrupted, cut off and out of the world. It is an unusual and thoughtful interpretation of the theme and is resonant of the images of people confined to their homes unable to have direct contact with friends and family."

Runner up

Alison Pink
'Out of this World'
Judges comment: "The highly commended runner up is No. 7 - an intriguing image comprising the virus escaping or being forced out of this world alongside an amorphous cloud-like formation, which from some angles is resonant of a person."
